The Big Differences

Trump System

Spades: Spades are always trump. Simple, consistent, and everyone knows what’s trump before any card is dealt.

Euchre: Trump changes every round. One suit is named trump, and the Jack of that suit becomes the highest card (Right Bower). The Jack of the same color (Left Bower) is second-highest. This creates a shifting strategy landscape.

Hand Size

Spades: 13 cards per hand, 13 tricks per round. Long, strategic rounds with lots of decisions.

Euchre: 5 cards per hand, 5 tricks per round. Quick, punchy rounds that fly by.

Bidding

Spades: Each player bids a specific number of tricks (0-13). Partners’ bids combine. Failing your contract = big penalty.

Euchre: One team “calls” trump (or declares suit). The calling team must win 3+ of 5 tricks. There’s no numeric bid — just “we’ll take the majority.”
